Case Story: Delta Airlines
Enhancing passenger satisfaction and baggage handling efficiency
Delta Air Lines revolutionizes baggage handling with real-time tracking using 1,600 Lyngsoe Systems’ Belt Loader Readers™ across 84 airports. Automated, efficient, and passenger-friendly.
Delta Air Lines transforms travel experience with real-time baggage tracking system
Delta Air Lines serves more than 180 million customers each year. Headquartered in Atlanta, Delta employs more than 80,000 employees worldwide and operates a mainline fleet of more than 800 aircraft, offering service to 304 destinations in 52 countries on six continents.
Delta Air Lines is handling and tracking the location of each passenger bag, in real-time, as it is loaded or unloaded from aircraft using 1,600 Lyngsoe Systems’ Belt Loader Readers™ in 84 airports. The system not only eliminates the need for manual barcode scanning when loading the aircraft, speeding up the load time as well as reducing the required amount of personel at the airside, it also automaticaly captures reliable information that Delta Air Lines is sharing with its passengers.
Bins were stacked in corners waiting to be processed
Among U.S. global carriers, Delta has top-rated baggage performance, but Delta kept climbing and took on an initiative to improve further on its baggage handling efficiency and passenger services. Delta wanted to give passengers peace of mind that their bags were in good hands and headed to the right destination. As part of that initiative, the company also wanted to make baggage handling at the plane-side more automatic, thereby reducing time on the ground for each flight. By using technology to prevent baggage mishandling, the company hoped to reduce manual labor and increasing baggage loading speed.
Secondly, the sheer number of materials being sorted daily was overwhelming for manual sorting. With an annual circulation of 7.1 million items, “things piled up fast,” admits Keller. Bins were stacked in corners waiting to be processed, and turnaround time was 48-72 hours. Misroutes were frequent and staff at branches needed 2-3 hours to check in incoming materials.
Belt load reader automatically confirms
Lyngsoe Systems have the only proven solution for RFID-enabled belt loader scanning. The Lyngsoe Belt Loader Reader™ is custom designed for the loading operation to provide the critical data needed at the plane side and supporting the baggage handlers in their work process. The Belt Loader Reader automatically confirm each bag is on the right flight at the right location and thereby eliminate the need to barcode scan each bag tag if a misrouted bag is detected, Lyngsoe’s integrated software triggers alerts and stop the belt loader preventing any wrongly loaded bags.
With the solution, Delta can ensure mistakes aren’t made in the baggage loading and unloading process. The airline can share the data with passengers via its own App, providing them with the assurance that the bags have been loaded and are headed safely for the proper destination.
Empowering travel with next-level baggage handling innovation
The benefits of implementing the Lyngsoe Systems’ Belt Loader Reader™ technology for baggage handling and tracking at Delta Air Lines extend beyond the initial solution, bringing a multitude of advantages that enhance passenger satisfaction, streamline operations, and optimize overall efficiency. These benefits encompass:
Efficient Passenger Notification:
The data captured by the Belt Loader Reader™ technology is seamlessly integrated into Delta's own systems, enabling the airline to share real-time baggage status information with passengers through its dedicated app. Passengers receive notifications as their baggage is detected by the reader, offering a level of engagement and involvement in the travel process that contributes to an overall positive passenger experience.
Enhanced Passenger Satisfaction:
Delta Air Lines' commitment to improving baggage handling efficiency directly contributes to passenger peace of mind. With real-time tracking and reliable data sharing, passengers are reassured that their bags are on the right path to their intended destinations. This elevated level of transparency cultivates trust between the airline and its customers, fostering a positive travel experience from start to finish.
Real-time Data Accessibility:
The integration of Lyngsoe's technology empowers Delta Air Lines with real-time, accurate data on baggage loading and unloading statuses. This data is instrumental in making informed decisions and streamlining operational workflows. It also provides the airline with the ability to promptly address any anomalies or issues, ensuring a smoother travel experience for passengers.
Reduced Operating Costs:
The reduction in manual labor, increased operational efficiency, and minimized potential mishandling incidents collectively contribute to cost savings for Delta Air Lines. These savings can be reinvested in other areas of the business, such as enhancing passenger amenities or improving infrastructure.
Reduced Loading Time:
The adoption of the Belt Loader Reader™ technology significantly reduces the time required for loading aircraft. By automating the baggage confirmation process, manual barcode scanning is eliminated, expediting the loading of each flight. This efficiency not only minimizes ground time but also contributes to more punctual departures, meeting passengers' expectations for timely travel.
Optimized Personnel Allocation:
The automation of baggage handling tasks leads to a decreased reliance on manual labor at the airside. This reduction in required personnel yields operational cost savings for the airline. Delta Air Lines can allocate its human resources more strategically, directing their focus toward other critical areas of passenger service and operational management.
Streamlined Baggage Sorting:
The Lyngsoe Belt Loader Reader™ technology resolves the challenge of overwhelming manual sorting processes. The automated system ensures that each bag is correctly placed on the right flight, mitigating the risk of misrouting and reducing the time spent sorting materials. This streamlined sorting process translates to enhanced operational efficiency and a reduced turnaround time for baggage handling.
Improved Baggage Loading Accuracy:
The automated system's ability to automatically detect misrouted bags and trigger alerts prevents loading errors. This precision safeguards against instances of baggage mishandling, which can result in passenger dissatisfaction and operational disruptions. The technology's reliability translates to increased accuracy in baggage handling, further enhancing Delta's reputation for exceptional service.
Summing it up
In summary, the implementation of the Lyngsoe Belt Loader Reader™ technology at Delta Air Lines goes beyond the initial challenge of improving baggage handling efficiency. It ushers in a range of benefits that encompass passenger satisfaction, operational excellence, and cost optimization. This innovative solution not only revolutionizes baggage handling processes but also contributes to Delta's overarching commitment to providing a seamless and enjoyable travel experience for its customers.
Visual indication to the handler about bag status
The Lyngsoe RFID Belt Loader Reader™ automatically detects each baggage tag as the bag put on the belt loader. The system is integrated with Deltas BRS system, which in real-time communicates with the Belt Loader Reader about loading status of bags. On the Belt Loader Reader™, there is an LED light stack to provide a visual indication to the handler about bag status and in the event of an error, a red light flashes and the ramp stops, preventing any loading errors.
Lyngsoe’s software manages all data and forwards it to Delta’s own baggage reconciliation system that allows the airline’s own software to share with passengers. Passengers using the Delta App receive a notification once the baggage tag has been detected by the Belt Loader Reader at either loading or unloading.
