How does RFID technology help your operations?
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology is a wireless communication technology that uses radio waves to transfer data encoded in an RFID tag to a reader. Passive RFID tags are smaller and less expensive, making them a more practical solution for tracking smaller items and large inventories. Passive RFID tags are battery-less, while active RFID tags require batteries or an alternate power source. This makes passive RFID tags a lower cost, more environmentally friendly option as there is no need for frequent disposal, therefore reducing waste. Manufacturers of passive tags are moving towards even more environmentally friendly processes, including reusing all the aluminum which is cut off when producing the RFID antenna inlay; many also offer eco-friendly paper labels instead of plastic. Passive RFID tags are also long-lasting and require minimal maintenance and less frequent replacement.
Passive RFID can be applied in a wide range of use cases
Passive RFID tags are versatile and widely used across various sectors for asset tracking, including tools and equipment, container tracking, pallets, roll cages and ULDs (unit load devices). Passive RFID is used in healthcare to track medical devices and equipment, ensuring the timely availability of said items to help reduce the risk of medical errors. Airlines use passive RFID to track customers’ luggage, improving baggage handling and security, and reducing the chances of lost luggage and delays. Passive RFID is used in manufacturing and supply chain to track pallets containing products, enabling efficient inventory management, and helping to reduce human error. Similarly, in the postal sector, passive RFID is used to track roll cages and post, allowing for the streamlined movement of packages, while improving efficiency and quality assurance.
How is passive RFID different from active RFID?
Passive and active RFID technology differ in several ways, including their power source, read range, functionality and cost. When choosing between passive and active RFID technology, it is essential to consider the requirements of the specific use case.
Passive RFID tags are smaller and less expensive than active tags, but they also have a shorter read range. Passive tags are often used for tracking smaller and many items or in situations where a lower cost, longer lasting or more sustainable solution is needed.
Active RFID tags have an internal power source, such as a battery, that allows them to send an active signal. They are more expensive than passive tags but have a longer read range. Active tags can also have additional features, such as sensors that can measure movement, temperature, humidity or light, making them a useful solution for specialized tracking needs. While passive tags can also monitor temperature, they can only do so in the presence of a reader, whereas active tags can record and store temperature information at any time. This makes active tags a more suitable solution for the tracking of food products or vaccines that must be stored at a certain temperature, with the temperature data recorded throughout transit.
