AUH - Aarhus University Hospital

"A hospital, where staff and it-systems know where staff, items, equipment etc. is located”

World's largest RFID-based tracking installation of its kind

Aarhus University Hospital (AUH) in Aarhus will treat around 100,000 admitted patients and 900,000 outpatients a year at full capacity. It will receive thousands of deliveries every day and have millions of items in its inventory. Construction started in 2012 and is expected to be completed in 2019. AUH is one of a new generation of super-hospitals packed with state-of-the-art equipment and systems.

With such staggering statistics, logistics is an obvious challenge. AUH is a frontrunner in optimizing logistics and the vision for service logistics at AUH is “A hospital, where staff and it-systems know where staff, items, equipment etc. is located”.

40 years of experience and a reputation for innovation brought Lyngsoe Systems into realization of that vision. The company was tasked to supply a comprehensive RFID-based tracking system designed to work with the Columna Service Logistics from main contractor Systematic. The tracking platform needed to have the capability and complexity to support multiple use cases (40 are identified) as well as huge amounts of data. Utilizing Lyngsoe Systems' long experience with RFID technology and complex problem solving, the tags are carefully selected and attached to equipment, beds, staff, items etc. and tracked by fixed mounted antennas throughout the complex. This makes it possible to find out, where a specific thing is located within more than 2000 rooms. The RFID-based tracking installation is the largest of its kind in the world.

Key benefits include:

  •          Reduction in time used in finding objects and colleagues
  •          Effective utilization of space, equipment, beds, consumables etc.
  •          Improved real-time insight in the actual workflows and logistic processes

Implementation of such an advanced and comprehensive system safeguards logistics at AUH well into the future. Patient care is dependent on the ready availability of equipment and personnel – particularly in emergencies. Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ together with Systematics Columna Service Logistics provide visibility for the hospital, adding value for staff and patients alike.
