Into the Future
New York Public Library - the Largest Public Library in the World
It began when a librarian from New York saw a YouTube video of a Lyngsoe sorter system in Seattle and told officials at the New York Public Library. They liked it so much that they contracted Lyngsoe Systems (then FKI Logistex) to design an even bigger system. "We needed the technology to keep up with the growing demand on our volumes and materials," said Salvatore Magaddino. "The manual operation just wasn't getting it done."
The 238 foot sorter is located in the new services center in Long Island City. It has been handling 8,500 items per hour which is about 140 items per minute. This would have taken many hours in the past. Requests can now be filled within 24 hours versus the 48 - 72 hours that it used to take. The Lyngsoe sortation system has saved 60,000 hours of staff time which frees up employees to spend more time with patrons.
