RFID on Baggage in Lisbon Airport

9 December 2008

On 9 December 2008, Lisbon Airport opened the new transfer baggage terminal with a Lyngsoe RFID on Baggage enabled baggage handling system (BHS). Lisbon Airport is the first airport in the world to fully integrate the transfer baggage handling with solely RFID and no barcode system.

Increase baggage handling capacity

Limited baggage handling capacity prompted Lisbon Airport to re-design their baggage handling system to service increasing numbers of travellers. The airport has performed an extensive analysis and process design review, which has delivered this completely renewed transfer baggage terminal that is capable of meeting the capacity, security and system reliability requirements.

RFID on Baggage

RFID-based baggage tracking was chosen to automate the baggage handling process as much as possible, and for its capability to decrease baggage handling errors through improved read rates and efficient tracking of bags throughout the BHS. Furthermore, the use of RFID is recommended by IATA and is regarded as the future technology for baggage handling. Today, Lisbon Airport will put RFID tags on all arriving transfer bags as they enter the terminal. This transfer tagging still offers positive business case benefits, but even further advantages are expected when bags start arriving with RFID tags from other airports.
