VMware – Server Consolidation and Virtualization
Imagine being able to run multiple operating systems and multiple applications on one server at the same time safely and without interfering with each other. The implications would be astounding — less space utilized, less energy used, faster implementation of new systems, and more efficient use of hardware, increased security, improved disaster recovery, among other things.
Today’s technology allows you to do just that. Using software, such as VMware, you can virtually transform the hardware of an x86-based computer into software; this includes the CPU, RAM, hard disk and network controller. It creates multiple virtual servers on one computer all sharing the same resources, but without interfering with each other.
This is just the beginning though, it can also help take an entire network of physical computers and servers, and transform them into a virtual infrastructure.
