RFID business benefits

Through a large number of RFID installations Lyngsoe has a proven record of providing business improvements within our core markets in the supply chain sector, the postal sector, the air transport sector and the library sector.

The largest RFID network in the world

largest RFID network in the world Our first large-scale deployment of RFID was for measuring quality-of-mail service in the Nordic postal operators in 1994. In 1996, Lyngsoe Systems started the cooperation with the International Post Corporation (IPC) for the implementation of an RFID-based solution aimed at monitoring and measuring quality of service in the mail service across 25 countries. The resultant system, AMQM, has evolved into the largest RFID network in the world; tracking delivery times and identifying bottlenecks and problems in mail service across 55 countries and serving postal operators handling approx 85% of global mail.

RFID adoption by industry

While the full potential of RFID is far from fully explored and exploited, RFID is being used for a multitude of purposes. RFID adoption has been accelerated through acceptance by key retail players, such as Wal-Mart and Tesco, and by European legislation that has obliged all goods to be traceable throughout the supply chain since 2005. The airport industry has also shown keen interest particularly in connection with baggage handling operations, which can capitalize on the use of RFID to streamline operations and deliver enhanced security. Lyngsoe implemented the world’s first RFID-on-baggage solution in Hong Kong International Airport, and this has since been followed by deployments at Milan Malpensa, Lisbon and Aalborg airports.

RFID tracking pack and seaBy using RFID technology in their production, Sauer-Danfoss has reduced their production errors by 70% and reduced the lead-time by 96%. The Danish fishing industry has also using the technology to track and manage fish crates and has just started to expand the solultion to also tracing the catch from vessel to consumer.

Adoption of RFID at the pallet and crate level is already commonplace and, as technology advances and RFID tag costs reduce further, tags will increasingly be seen on more high-value or secure items. However, it is important to look at the entire business case and ROI for implementing RFID and not just the tag cost. This has proven to be the correct approach when looking at RFID deployment on, for example, RFID on baggage or asset tracking and management on load bearers.
